Game Changer...

This morning Will and I got up and got ready like every other normal work day. Every morning we let Chief out to use the bathroom while we are cranking the cars and leave him out for a few minutes while we finish up in the house. This morning as I was putting Sonni in the car and hollering for Chief (as usual.....) I saw Will's truck stop in the road and then a few minutes later reverse into the driveway. As you may already know the unthinkable had happened. In that short period while we were in the house, Chief had gone into the road to eat something someone had thrown out. Will did not even have to say a word when he got out of the truck...the look on his face said it all. Chief had been hit by a car. He was dead instantly....I am completely heart broken. I have buried a child today...we have had Chief for 9 years. He was one of the greats...one of those dogs that you can never replace and that you never forget. He has slept on my pillow for the past 9 years. He was a member of my family...He was my best friend....
Chief was the best dog anyone could ask for...you will be greatly missed. I wanted to also take this opportunity to document why he was such a great dog. After his puppy period...Chief would stay in the house (up to 14 hours due to our work schedules) without using the bathroom. He would scratch at the door to go out. He would also scratch at the bedroom or bathroom door to get in and out. He would do tricks (for treats of course!) roll over, beg, and play dead. Gigi was trying to teach him to shake which he would do sometimes, but as the saying goes...it is hard to teach an old dog new tricks.  He was terrified of storms and fireworks and would hide in the closet or under the bed. His claws would make this chichichi sound on the hardwood floors as he prepared to get under the bed or jump up on the bed. He also loved Justin and would follow him everywhere when he was around. He would even sleep in his bed when he was home from school. He would run off every chance he got...especially if it meant he got to get in the pond. In fact when he was about 6 months old, he ran off and didn't come back for about 6 weeks. Everyone at church was praying for this puppy. Then he had the mange and had to be locked in the playhouse for a few weeks. We had to treat the house like someone had lice. Will got me Chief as a Valentines present the first year we were together. We drove the bug to New Albany Mississippi to pick him up. We meet the people at Walmart and they were very strange ( a big fat lady with a mustache and a really small Mexican man). A few years later we saw those same people on the news. They had a puppy mill at their house and they had foster children (one had died due to neglect) and they had fled to Mexico. We laughed like crazy when we saw their pictures on the news. It also explained where the mange came from...Chief was a Valentines gift but we actually shared the same birthday. I was finishing up high school when I first got Chief so he lived at my parent's house then and while I was gone to college. Mom has always said that they had to replace the carpet and get new furniture before he became such a "great dog" and then right about that time...I took him away with me. This has been very hard on everyone because we were all very attached. He loved to ride in the car in the drivers lap with his head out the window and going to the river or sand bar. In fact he was happy going where ever Will and I were going, especially if it was outside. Losing Chief has been very hard for me.......I miss him so much. Chief had even grown to love Sonni and would always come upstairs with us for bath time and in the mornings to greet Sonni. I have put together the pictures I have saved on my computer of Chief.
Chief you will be missed....
